As stylists, we love nothing more than seeing our guests walk out feeling confident, glossy, and brand new. But here’s the truth: what happens after you leave the salon chair can make all the difference in how your hair looks and feels weeks later. So, here are the five biggest post-appointment mistakes we see all the time and how to make sure your hair keeps looking like it just got done.
Washing Too Soon
We know it’s tempting, but don’t wash your hair right away! After a color or treatment, your hair needs time to settle. Washing too soon can fade color or disrupt treatments that are still setting in.
👉 Our advice: Wait at least 48 hours before shampooing if you’ve had color, gloss, or smoothing treatments. This gives the cuticle time to close and the product to fully bond. Stylist Insight: “the tone will fade faster, and that initial shine will not last as long.”
Skipping the Recommended Products
We don’t suggest professional home care just because it smells amazing (even though it does). We recommend it because you’re at-home products are the second half of your salon service. When you use the wrong shampoo or skip heat protection, you’re undoing the professional work that went into your service.
👉 Our advice: Stick with the shampoo, conditioner, and treatments your stylist suggested. We’ve chosen them specifically for your hair type, color, and texture goals.
Stylist Insight: “Professional color-safe formulas protect your investment, they’re literally like insurance for your hair.”
Avoid Chlorine & Salt Water After Your Appointment
Fresh color and chlorine do not mix. Getting into highly chlorinated or salt water right after your hair appointment can cause color fading, dryness, and uneven tones, especially for blondes or lightened hair.
👉 Our advice: DO NOT get in right after your hair appointment.
- Wait at least one week before swimming to let your color fully settle.
- Always use a leave-in conditioner or oil before getting in the water, it helps create a protective barrier.
- Rinse and treat your hair with a hydrating mask afterward to keep it soft and shiny.
Ignoring Maintenance Appointments
Your hair color and shape are like art, they need touch-ups to stay fresh. Waiting too long between visits leads to faded tones, grown-out layers, and more work at your next session. (it will be like starting from scratch.)
👉 Our advice: Pre-book your next appointment before leaving the salon. We recommend:
- Toner/Gloss Refresh: depending in how much you wash your hair, 4-6 weeks.
- Haircuts/Trims: every 6-8 weeks
- Balayage, Highlights or Color Touch-Up: every 10–12 weeks (depending on your look, toner refresh in between at the 6-week mark recommended)
Sleeping on Wet Hair (or Rough Pillowcases)
We see it all the time frizz, breakage, and even tangled color damage caused by going to bed with wet hair. When your hair is wet, it’s at its weakest, so all that tossing and turning causes stress on the strands.
👉 Our advice: Always let your hair dry before bed or braid it loosely if you must sleep with damp hair. And if you haven’t already, invest in a silk or satin pillowcase (it’s one of the easiest ways to reduce breakage and frizz overnight.) Stylist Insight: “A silk pillowcase is the kind of small luxury that makes a big difference, especially for blondes and guests with fine or textured hair.”
Your time in the salon chair is where the magic starts but your home care is where it truly lasts. As stylists, we want you to love your hair every single day, not just on appointment day.
So, next time you leave with that fresh blowout or new color, remember how you treat your hair after your appointment is what keeps it looking beautiful long after you leave our chairs.
Remember, It’s more than hair, it’s a vibe!
XOXO, Bonjour Belle Salons
